Just Us Box: Making Memories

I hate the term ‘date nights’, I really do. Like, really get irritated by it. But at the same time, I can absolutely see why people do them and make a thing about them. Since we had our eldest child almost six years ago, I can count on one hand the amount of evenings that Graham and I have had to ourselves, to spend time as a couple.

Sure, when the kids are all in bed we might stick a film on and watch it together, but it’s still quite a singular activity. We don’t talk whilst we are watching it, and to be honest, it’s something we could easily do on our own. Most nights are spent me working on my laptop and Graham watching NCIS or whatever.

When we were given the chance to review a ‘Just Us Box’, I thought it would be a nice idea.  The ‘Just Us Box’ is a monthly subscription box to create your own date nights, starting at £18 a month. Each month has a different theme and the January one was ‘Making Memories’ We’ve been together almost 14 years, and we always used to do silly things together. Obviously, now it’s all about the kids, so the thought of spending a couple of hours concentrating on the two of us and making some memories and thinking back to memories was lovely.

Living so far away from our family, we don’t have the opportunity for child-free nights, so one night after the kids went to bed, we ordered ourselves a takeaway and opened up the box. It was crammed with a lovely selection of bits and pieces  – Stack ‘Em game, selfie stick, photo box, two string bracelets, a glass jar, a tin, some stickers, some permanent markers and lollipop sticks. I was intrigued to see how these all would fit into our evening!

We set up the block game, sticking the questions on the blocks.  It was great fun trying to work out which block would tumble the tower and make us think. It was a bit cheesy, but it made us both smile and talk, which can only be a good thing!

We then moved onto the sticks, writing down things we want to do this year. Again, because of childcare issues, most of ours involve the kids, but that’s just how it is sometimes as parents. Maybe when my parents come to stay in the summer we will get a night at the cinema or a restaurant alone!

The selfie stick was a great addition to the box. Usually, to get a photo of ourselves we have to set my tripod up and faff about with the camera. This made it really easy to take some silly photos of us! The photo box is perfect for keeping those photos in once we get round to printing them out!

The string Wish Bracelets were my favourite bit though. We both put them on and made a wish, and apparently, when they start to fray it means our wish is on its way! A week later, they’re still going strong but that’s not a bad thing because they’re actually really lovely!

So, it was a bit cheesy as I expected, but it was lots of fun. It was nice to switch off the TV, put our phones down (apart from the selfies!) and just spend some quality time together.

  1. I’ve tried the Just Us box too, and it was great. Not necessarily things we’d normally do, but good fun!
