Just One Thing – A Little Step Toward Better Health

Like most parents, I’m busy all the time. I also have to prioritise my kids over everything else I might do for myself. Just as you think you’re getting into a healthier routine, something will come along and turn it all upside down again. I’ve been looking into lots of advice and tips to change to a healthy lifestyle in a way I can stick to, no matter what. They tend to offer the same suggestion – change just one thing.

One thing sounds easy to do, but it doesn’t sound like it would make much difference. However, once you’ve changed that one thing for good, it becomes routine – a part of your lifestyle forever more. Surely then you are ready to tackle another change? With all the disruptions and changes around here, one thing could be a challenge in itself. Still, here’s hoping something might stick!
There are plenty of things to tackle. Most of us could do with eating a few more portions of fruit and vegetables each week. Another exercise session a week would be a healthy challenge to take on too! But if you pick something you know you can do no matter what gets in the way or how much your schedule changes, you’re more likely to stick with it for life. Make it part of your everyday routine.

Plenty of us can be put off by vegetables. They take a lot of work to prepare and can be the source of many arguments at the family dinner table. There are plenty of very tasty smoothie and detox juice recipes out there. You just need a good machine to whip them up for you! There are plenty of brands to choose from. You might check online to see which is the best Vitamix to start with and make your choice from there. Now all you need are your fresh fruits and vegetables for a healthy drink every day. Even the kids won’t say no!

When you’re in a rush to get to work, chances are you drop the kids off to school in the car. Walking to school and back is one of the healthiest options for all the family. However, this doesn’t work during the school holidays (there are so many at this time of the year!) What you need is a purpose for the walk. Perhaps you have a dog you can walk twice a day? Or maybe you like to read a daily newspaper and can walk to the store to fetch it? When you’re tired, and you’re struggling to fit it in, you really do need that excellent reason to get out there for that walk.

Do you ever struggle to get enough sleep? Sleep is one thing that really does improve with a strict routine. Head to bed at the same time every evening. Do the same things before you turn out the light. And try to be asleep for about seven and a half hours each night, even if you have to get up for the kids. What one thing can you change for a healthier life?
